memo to 0.0.0.0: universal colonization (continued)
wiz@thoughtrights.com, July 2004

Back in September 2000, I had a fever and jotted some stuff down about how according to most algorithms I could think of, we either must be a colony of something bigger in the galaxy, or we're some fragile experiment of a broader intelligence. I had been thinking more thoughts about barriers to such interstellar travel, self-destructive species and short communication time-spans (we've only done it for ~50 years), etc.

Well. This is all old hypothesis stuff. It dates back to 1950 actually. Read up on the Fermi Paradox. It's all about the question of colonization across the universe and timespans. There's lots of side notes on the possibilities and justifications either way.

There is one point of view I don't see; Interstellar travel may be much more difficult than suspected or presumed possible. Another variant on "intelligent life civilizations self-destruct" is that they don't stay at high enough level to colonize or even emit communications long enough. We should't be fooled that our civilization's broadcasts have been going on very long.

And I suppose that there's another humourous explaination; our solar system is the equivalent of a National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). For non U.S. readers, the U.S. has large areas of land where; they are sometimes fenced off, no form of development (commercial or residential) is allowed, no roads exist, no hunting, just the occasional tour or adventureous hiker. I told a friend about my silly revelation here and he suggested that people seeing UFOs might be similar to various herds of animals seeing the occasional SUV drive by in an NWR.
